It's really weird to realize that you have no authority over your own personal finances. I am what I imagine is the average college student with the normal upbringing. My parents pay for everything around here and I just have to make sure that I don't screw up my grades so that I can get a good job when I graduate. I know that for some people this may seem like a dream but for me it's just the way it is. Obviously I have met some people who are in much different social situations as I am and so I have a bit of respect for the fact that I have had it so good from the start. I don't have to work if I don't want to and I don't other than when it comes to what I am required by school. This life of general freedom is nice but even I can see where it is like being stuck on one of the extremes. Opposite of myself are those who don't even have the option of going to college and have no way of pulling themselves out of the place where they have been stashed by society or history. They also have no authority over their future and have to simply accept the fact that they are where they are and have to earn everything they ever get. My situation is only similar in the extremity of its hold on itself. For those in my group there is much more freedom and we just have never been given the choice to change it.
I have decided to change my situation. I am really tired of just living for my parents and I want to get out there and get some real life experience. I have gotten myself a job on campus as an office worker for the summer and I have just switched my family health insurance over to a private firm which I pay for. This is a big step towards the way in which I really want to live for myself. I think that I am blessed to be able to make the decision when to take power of my own life and my own future.
