Viruses

I was just reading this article about Virus Removal Christmas news on About.com and it said that there was a virus going around that was like an email being sent out (from friends, obviously not on purpose) and when you clicked in it would say Merry Christmas or Happy New Year but it would download this virus onto your computer.
It seems like most of the viruses are disguised as messages from friends or greetings. I have never understood though what the point of a virus was. Why would anyone want a virus or want anyone else to have one? When I went in to get my computer fixed and get antivirus software put onto my computer they were explaining to me that the people who fix computers (well not actually fix computers but the people who own the virus removal software) make money off of viruses. This idea had never occurred to me before. I would think that even those people would get viruses on their computers and that they wouldn't want them either.
A virus is like the worst thing that can happen to your computer though. It literally ruins your day, because even though the people at our campus who fix computers are really nice and usually really efficient, it is a hassle to have to carry your computer around campus with you for the day (because you cant park there so you just have to bring it to class with you and stop by sometime) but also trying to make an appointment is hard (especially that few weeks when everyone's computer was messing up). And then you have to sit there or leave your computer for hours or even days and then come back to pick it up and then not even know for hours or days if it is working for sure.
It is just the worst thing to have to deal with especially if you are like me and don't know anything about computers. I have to just rely on what the people who are fixing it are telling me and hopefully (well when I bring it to a store to be fixed) they are not ripping me off. My friend just had her computer fixed and it took a week longer than they said it would and they charged her a lot extra then they originally said as well. It is just a huge hassle for everyone.
