NSEP Scholarship Info Session!

Presenter: Jeff Wing, National Scholarship Coordinator, The Honors College

The NSEP/Boren Scholarship provides funding of up to $20,000 for up to one year of study abroad for U.S. students who want to study languages critical to U.S. interests – including Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Turkish and most languages spoken in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and the Middle East. NSEP/Boren Scholarship recipients are required to work for the federal government for one year either before or after completing graduate school. Scholars are encouraged to find jobs in the federal government where they can continue to use and build their language skills. Applicants must be US citizens and have an interest in working for the government in some capacity related to national security interests (which can be broadly defined).

Study Abroad - You Can't Afford to Miss This

OMSA Brown Bag Luncheon Series presents Study Abroad – You Can’t Afford to Miss This! The event takes place on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 from 12:00pm – 1:00pm in Room 215 in the University Student Commons. Faculty members from VCU Education Abroad and the University Career Center will discuss the financial, personal, and academic benefits of studying abroad and strategies for recruiting students of color in study abroad programs.

Study Abroad Students to Participate in Research Conference

The VCU School of World Studies is hosting the 13th Annual Student Research Conference with the theme of "Mediated Identities" this year on November 1-2.

Our recent study abroad returnees as well as some of our visiting exchange students will participate on Friday, November 2 in a variety of ways. The Study Abroad Hall will be in the Student Commons Virginia Ballroom B from 10-4. There will be eight half-hour presentations by returnees, a Study Abroad Info Session, as well as an hour-long Panel Discussion from 12-1.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

10-10:30 Emad Maghsoudi, China, Oxford and London

10:30-11 Study Abroad General Info Session

11-11:30 Elaine Kelley, Trier and Other Travels

11:30-12 Vasili Uspensky, Russia and Peru

12-1 Panel Discussion*

1-1:30 Study in the UK session with Nitin Yerram and Rajshri Mainthia

1:30-2 Cassie Williams, Spain

2-2:30 Lauren Jaslow, Advertising in Amsterdam and Costa Rica

2:30-3 Sara Zavik, Spain

3-3:30 Hannah Abbey and Inna Katsev, Social Work in the Dominican Republic

3:30-4 Roshan George, Spain and Oxford

The Panel Discussion from 12-1 will feature over 10 students from the US and abroad. The discussion will be led by Stephanie Davenport, Assistant Director of Education Abroad. We’ll be discussing what it is like to study in another country and how it affects students both personally and academically. We’ll talk both to students from the U.S. who have studied abroad in another country and international students who are studying abroad here at VCU.

This discussion will give insight for students that are interested in going abroad and anyone that is interested in experiencing another culture first hand.

Study in Malaysia over Winter Intersession

In collaboration with our partner school, Curtin University, VCU Education Abroad is offering a Winter Intersession study abroad program at Curtin's satellite campus in Borneo, Malaysia from December 20, 2007 until January 12, 2008. Study the people, history, geography, fauna and wildlife of Borneo, as well as the arts and crafts from the region. Students will earn 3-6 credits in various subjects (honors credit available).
