The blog has been upgraded for security and new feature enhancements.
Enjoy!
A security vulnerability which caused a denial of service attack early Wednesday morning was found and requires us to upgrade the system. The VCU Blog will be unavailable for updating during this upgrade but will be available for reading.
We regret the inconvenience.
I have updated the Blog Help with some new features and tutorials.
I have added:
- Adding a links section to your blog
- Adding a calendar to your blog
- How to move the sidebar to the left side of the page
I also added some templates with these features already added, so all you have to do is copy and paste. (Get them here)
Happy Blogging.
The upgrade has been completed. If you experience any problems with your blog please let me know.
If your blog was moved to the new system please make sure all the images that you have uploaded are still working.
If you would like your blog moved to the new system please email me the URL. Or if you want to start over, just log in and a new blog will be auatomatically created. You will still need to contact me so I can remove the redirect on your site. All redirects will be removed on March 1st.
If you are a new user and want a blog just log in with your VCU eID and password. A blog will automatically be created for you.
Happy Blogging
Sunday will be the last day to post entries your OLD BLOG. You will need to log in to the new blog after monday to make updates. Check this site for details.
http://blog.vcu.edu will continue to be the place to get updates on the Blog upgrade.
The VCU Blogs will be upgraded in the upcoming week. We are moving to Moveable Type 3.2. This offers some additional features and more control over your blog.
All of your current content can be moved to the new system and there will be no downtime for your readers. All URLs will remain the same, so you will not need to update any links. I will be emailing everyone with a blog account when the new system is up and you are able to create accounts.
For new bloggers, accounts will automatically be created the first time you log in. You will also have more control over the preferences in administering your blog.
We will also be supporting podcasting in the new blog. So get your mp3 players ready!
Let me know if you have any questions.
I will be offering two classes that will teach blogging and the new system:
- Blog
- Blog
Welcome to the NEW VCU Blog! This is an upgraded version of the old blog.
If you had an account on the old blog you will need to create an account here, then email blog@vcu.edu and request that all of your content be moved over. You will be able to transfer all posts and comments from the old blog keeping all post dates the same.
If this is your first blog or you do not wish to move your old content, then just log in with your VCU eID and your blog will be automatically created for you.
Happy Blogging!
I finally got a chance to get rid of the ugly grey site. This is now a custom style that I made. I think it looks a little less depressing. :)
This was a fairly simple style change; just some color changes and I added an Image to the header. But I think it makes the site look a whole lot better.
John just installed a comment spam filter on the Blog. I realize it has gotten pretty bad, so hopefully this will help a bit.
If you still see spam in you comments then please let me know and I will add it to the filter. Also there might still be a few spam comments in your blog as the filter got most, but not all of the spam comments.
I hope this makes your blogging more enjoyable.
Thanks,
Rob
The search function in the blogs now works.
If you have removed it, here is the code to add it back:
<div class="sidetitle">
Search
</div>
<div class="side">
<form method="get" action="<$MTCGIPath$><$MTSearchScript$>">
<input type="hidden" name="IncludeBlogs" value="<$MTBlogID$>" />
<label for="search" accesskey="4">Search this site:</label><br />
<input id="search" name="search" size="20" /><br />
<input type="submit" value="Search" />
</form>
</div>
Happy Searching!
I just noticed that the "new entry" and "edit entry" pages are missing a feature when using firefox. The style toobar is available in IE, but not Firefox. This includes tools for making URLs, Bold text, underlined text, and itallic text.
If you use Firefox you can just enter the HTML tags to get those features. If you are not comforatable with programming HTML then please use an Internet Explorer Browser.
