From the Seat of Authority
From the Seat of Authority explores how contextualization, or framing, of art and artifacts within a museum setting precipitates the construction of meaning. On view are juxtapositions of works from the Gallery’s permanent collection by various artists, including Gertrude Morgan, Andy Warhol, Hiroshige, Bill Haney and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as artifacts from China, Nepal, Guatemala and Zaire. Curatorial interpretation and presentation reconfigure the meaning and reception of art works displayed apart from the contexts of their conception, original function or cultural significance. Through a lens tightly focused on the subjectivity inherent in this process, "truths" told from the curators’ seat of authority may be seen as all but absolute.
