Status Codes

In catalog records, you will find status codes adjacent to the call numbers, which indicate an item's availability. Most commonly, you will find the status, "Normal Loan." This podcast discusses the meaning of "Normal Loan" and other common statuses.

Understanding location codes

When you find an item of in the VCU Libraries catalog, you will notice in the record that there is a Location/Call Number field. The location codes will tell you where the item is located within Cabell Library on the Monroe Park Campus or Tompkins-McCaw Library on the medical campus. Common location codes for Cabell Library are covered in this podcast.

Update: As mentioned in the podcast, you can request items from Compact Storage by filling out the item request form (under the Forms tab on the main library Web page). You can now also request items from compact shelving by filling out a form available at the circulation desk.

Reading a Call Number

Once you find a book of interest in the VCU Libraries Catalog, check to make sure it's available by clicking on the "Is this item available?" link and then note the Call Number. This podcast explains how to read the Call Number. Remember: Call Numbers begining with the letters A through M are located on the 3rd floor of Cabell Library, while Call Numbers beginning with the letters N through Z are located on the 4th floor.
