Beautiful Momery

We are leaving for New York this weekend. I'm not as excited as I thought I would be. Spending three weeks in Richmond, I begin to like this city. The beautiful environment, quiet atmosphere, and friendly people are all what I want. Except for the food, I feel quite at home here in Virginia.
It is a new experience for me to say "Hello" to strangers. however, I feel great about it. This is a sign of harmony. I love people in Richmond!
It is said that New York is not such a friendly city as Richmond. Well, I believe everyone has his own interpretation toward a certain place, or a certain group of people. New York is a big city. The society is more complicated. People in New York live in a even more quick-fixed society. Even if it is true that New Yorkers turn indifferent to others, it is understandable. How you think about the world you live in depends on how the surrounding environment affect your life. No one wants to be evil. Bad people are indeed driven to do evil things against their own wish.
I'm not being idealistic about the world. I believe deep down people are all alike. We all have the ability to judge what is good and what is bad, and we all want to gain a nice reputation. The reason why some people fail to do this is not because they intend not to do so. As is pointed out above, the circumstance drive them so.
I still have high expectation for New York. I love Richmond, and I'm going to love New York and Washington D.C..
By now, I'm sure that it would be a hard departure on August 10th when we head back for China. I love all the interns. I want to thank you for your great hospitality and friendliness. I will miss you all. Thank you for giving me such a unique and rich experience in the US.
As a famous Chinese saying goes: All I want to say is just in silence. We have already touched each other's heart. Let's keep our friendship forever!

Why "Joy Luck"?

Among all the English novels I have read, my favorite one is Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. I like it because in this one book I see two different types of cultures, of which, one is my own culture: Chinese culture, and the other is the current most popular one: American culture.
This novel is mostly about the generation gap between mothers and daughters. For various reasons, several Chinese women came to the US and settled down there. Their Chinese inheritance kept them far away from the younger generation who only drank coke and did not know how to speak Chinese.
The conflict between mothers and daughters is the reflection of the conflict between Chinese culture and American culture when they come to contact with each other. I get a lot from this book. One of the most important thing is that we should never give up our own culture while taking in other advanced cultures.
One thing I do not understand is why Amy titled the book The Joy Luck Club since the central theme running through the whole novel is rather sorrowful. Well, I've got to figure it out.

All Are Actors

When it comes to definition, people would always disagree. As for what is acting, in my personal opinion, everybody can be referred to as an actor.
Living in such a complicated society, we all have numerous relations with those who live around us and we may meet everyday. Nowdays, with the development of high technology, such as the internet, we are able to establish relations with someone who we might never have the opportunity to meet with.
we are sure to act differently towards those who are close to us and towards those who are just passer-bys. This, as far as I am concerned, can be called acting. socializing with others, we cannot do things without considering others' feelings. our behavior is limited to some degree, thus we are not always one hundred percent ourselves. we are always acting according to the situation we are facing and according to the people we are together with.
I cannot agree with Erik more that acting can help us to experience something new, something we may not dare to do in our real life. acting is a good way to let out some emotions that we may have hold too long.

Made in China

I tried to find something typical of America to bring back to China. However, lots of the staffs that I picked up in the stores were labeled as "Made in China", especially most of the toys.
The United States government keeps on accusing China for the bilateral trade relation. As a matter of fact, American people depend heavily on Chinese products in their daily life. Admit it or not, the US government cannot control this trend of trade relationship. After all, the public can benefit from those Made-in-China staffs.

I'm Exhausted!

Having fun is also energy consuming. coming back from the wonderful home visit, I'm already tied. today's trip is even tiring. I have noticed that some of the interns are also exhausted. well we have to make use of every minute, but we should still strike a balance between visiting and resting. anyway, we have to save energy for our tour to NY and D.C.. and of course, do not forget about the paper.

Thanks Giving Dinner in July

We had a wonderful home visit last weekend. Phuc planed lots of activities for us. We joined her friends to a Hawai'i party, and they cooked a lot of delicious food for us. That evening, Phuc's friend Jenny, who she met in church, cooked us a fabulous Thanks Giving dinner. what is more, there were lots of DIYs. we learned a lot about American cuisine from Jenny and Phuc.
Phuc must be very tied after two days' driving. we experienced a lot during these two days. Thanks Giving dinner in July, how wonderful it is! we should give thanks to those who have helped us and given us so much joy whenever we have the opportunity. Festivals are only symbols. we should feel free to show our love to others.
Thanks, Phuc!
