VCU Cabell First Novelist Festival will be held today at 6:30pm in the Richmond Salons at the VCU Commons and hear Deb Olin Unferth read from her winning novel Vacation. Following the reading, Unferth will take part in panel discussion with her agent, David McCormick, and her editor from McSweeney's, Eli Horowitz. The three of them will trace the history of her novel from conception to publication. The event is free and open to the public, and a book-signing and reception will follow. Earlier that afternoon, we will have a 2pm Q&A with Unferth in the Cabell Room on the 4th floor of VCU Cabell Library. We look forward to seeing you at these events!
The VCU Department of English is pleased to host a lecture by Professor Rivka Swensen as a part on its ongoing "First Friday" lecture series. The lecture will take place this Friday, November 6 at 3pm in Hibbs 308. Topic: "Vulnerable Subjects: Theorizing the Eighteenth-Century Gaze."
All First Friday events are free and open to the public.
The Department of English and the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University are pleased to host a reading by acclaimed author, Colson Whitehead. The reading will take place on Thursday, October 29th, at 8 pm in the University Student Commons, Commonwealth A.

MA Alum Brian Prestwood's essay entitled "Poe’s Breach with Romantic Tradition in “Introduction”" will soon be published in The Explicator.
Our congrats go out to current MFA Student Marie Potoczny whose story The Fifth Date was a runner up for the 2009 Indiana Review 1/2 K Prize. Author Lydia Davis was the final judge in this year's competion.

Recent MFA Graduate Elizabeth Quinn will have a story published in the fall/winter edition of LIT magazine out of the New School in New York. She is currently serving as an adjunct instructor at JMU in the Writing and Rhetoric Department.
