The VCU Department of English is pleased to host a lecture by Professor Rivka Swensen as a part on its ongoing "First Friday" lecture series. The lecture will take place this Friday, November 6 at 3pm in Hibbs 308. Topic: "Vulnerable Subjects: Theorizing the Eighteenth-Century Gaze."

All First Friday events are free and open to the public.

MA Alum Brian Prestwood Publishes Essay

MA Alum Brian Prestwood's essay entitled "Poe’s Breach with Romantic Tradition in “Introduction”" will soon be published in The Explicator.

Professor Les Harrison will be chairing a panel on "Poe and Information Technologies" and presenting a paper at the Third International Edgar Allan Poe Conference: The Bicentennial.  Several current graduate students, including Jen Smith (MATX), Timothy Towslee (MA) and Ryan Cales (MA) will also present on the same panel.

Recent MA graduates Leslie Cohngee and Carolyn White were hired as collateral faculty at VCU University College.

Recent MA graduate John Coffey was hired as a 12th grade English teacher in Martinsville, VA.

MA Alum Diane Critchfield presented a paper at South Dakota University's Women Studies Conference and recently became co-chair of the English Department at Germanna Community College.

MA alum Ashyn Howell presented at NACADA Regional Conference and taught at University of Richmond's Osher Lifelong Institute, a course she designed entitled Women Who Name Fire: An Exploration of Contemporary Female American Poets. She will also teach for Henrico County's Adult Education program at Germanna Community College in the fall.

Professor Josh Eckhardt's book, Manuscript Verse Collectors and the Politics of Anti-Courtly Love Poetry, will be published next month by Oxford University Press.

Kathy Bassard Awarded CTE Grant

Department of English faculty member Kathy Bassard has won a VCU Center for Teaching Excellence grant to create a Faculty Learning Community for next academic year. Kathy will be working with others in VCU's Black Educational Association to find methods for enhancing the learning experience of African American students at Virginia Commonwealth University.
