apse: states of matter

this is a draft of two projects that may or may not go together. the audio consists of field samples that i took myself and then worked with, using logic. the video is an imovie sketch of perhaps a larger project, but to be honest, i felt strange about just posting audio without something to look at, which i know is odd, but i did, so i made the video last minute. it is a remediation of a larger piece of writing i did last fall.

what i'm interested in is how the audio gets warped by imovie, then youtube--ha. seriously, i'm interested in what you hear, what you concentrate on when both things (audio + video) are put together. if they should be separated. that kind of thing. the audio piece got cut off at the end, so i have more to do with it. but not tonight.

so, questions include:
should the two go together? if so, in what format? if not, what should i be thinking about when i contemplate next steps for each piece?

please comment on sound quality as you hear it. maybe close your eyes and concentrate on the audio and tell me what you hear and what you're feeling or thinking about as you hear it. also, does the audio need to be edited? i'm worried that it might be too busy.

what is your thinking about the text in the video? what do you "read"?

here is the video:

here is the audio with no video:

Coming Back After a Long Summer:)

My online work has been existing mostly through social networking sites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and my summer class used Ning to do their blogging and research, so this blog has been sort of occupying dead space on the computernets recently. My goal is to start to use this to publish research findings and other academic work, as well as to feature creative work and student projects.

I decided not to use blogs in my Women's Studies courses this semester because I have way too many students to manage, but I'm looking for creative ways to do so if anyone has ideas. With FI students, I had them create blogs and I read them through my Google Reader, but the set-up took some time. Now that I have twice the number of students, I'm trying to figure out ways to do blogs that are productive. Any advice would be helpful.

I'm off to the library...will publish pictures later...:)

It's been a minute since I've posted...heesh!

Wow! It's been over a month since my last post. I feel like I did when I was a kid, going to Confession at the Catholic Church. Ah, the guilt. Well, I've started a *new* blog with some teacher friends that details our adventures cooking food that we get from the Fertile Crescent Farm. Faye, Peter, and I are sharing a "share" of the farm, which means that we get a heaping bag and then some of fresh veggies every week. We split them up and it's enough food for the three of us to eat all week. Amazing. To avoid being redundant, visit our group food blog here.

Other things that are new. I'm changing jobs. I'm moving from Focused Inquiry to Women's Studies full time. It was a hard decision to make because I so love teaching first year students and my colleagues and bosses in the FI Program. Women's Studies is a small, but mighty, department, and my hope is that I can help it grow. I really love teaching those classes too, so I know it will be a good fit for me. I'm also starting the Media, Art, and Text PhD program here at VCU in the Fall, so I'll have a lot to blog about.

Otherwise, I've started teaching summer school in May. I am teaching the Intro to Women's Studies course, and my students are amazing! They are brave and fabulous for taking such a demanding course in such a small amount of time. Many of them are taking multiple classes too, so I have to give them some kudos for rocking it out with me. I start another course on Monday called Queer Theory/Lesbian Texts, which is a cross-listed course in English and Women's Studies. I've never taught this one before, so it will be a grand experiment. I can't wait to get started. For that course, we are going to build a networked site using Ning, so I'm excited to see how that will turn out.

Today I will put the finishing touches on the QT course and am meeting Bonnie for coffee and reading papers. Hopefully this weekend I can get back in the garden. I will post pictures once it's in the shape that I want it to be in. For my FI students who are reading, post to your blogs too! I never stop reading them, you know :) I miss the two groups I had this Spring. It was so nice to be with such great students for a full year. What a luxury!
