Virginia Commonwealth University’s College of Humanities and Sciences will present “The Desegregation of Southern Medical Education: Edith Irby Goes to Medical School,” as part of the 2007-08 Science, Technology and Society lecture series. The lecture features Vanessa Northington Gamble, MD., Ph.D., professor of medical humanities at George Washington University. The internationally recognized physician and medical historian will discuss the history of race and racism in American medicine, more specifically the racial and ethnic disparities faced by Edith Irby - the first African American female graduate of a Southern medical school.
