The Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Women’s Health recently hosted the 4th Annual Women’s Health Research Day, which celebrated and promoted excellence in interdisciplinary women’s health research and featured experts who discussed the physical, mental and general welfare of women. For the third year in a row, the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System has been named the Greater Richmond Area Employer of Choice. The VCU Health System also received the national Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. The award presentations were made Wednesday at the annual All Star Awards presented by the Richmond Human Resources Management Association and the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Read more.

On Monday, May 19th, at 9:30 p.m. on WCVW public television, a segment will be aired called "A Matter of Heart". This segment is part of VCU TV-HD's "Inside Out" program. The program is about Dr. Richard Lower, a highly distinguished physician scientist who was a faculty member at VCU for approximately 20 years as head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Sheldon Retchin, M.D., M.S.P.H., Vice President for Health Sciences, VCU, Chief Executive Officer, VCU Health System, interviewed Dr. Lower, and the interview, with pictures and videos from the past, is part of the program. It is largely about the innovative work Dr. Lower performed, along with Dr. Norm Shumway, in developing the techniques that led to the world's first heart transplant. This program will be available on the following cable/satellite services: 24 on Adelphia/Comcast, 57 on DirectTV, 24 on Verizon Fios, and 9392 on DISH. Leaves lasting impression at institution
Richard R. Lower, M.D., who helped develop the techniques for transplanting a human heart and performed the ninth transplant in the United States, died May 17 at his home in Twin Bridges, Mont. He was 78. Read more.
