Billy R. Martin, Ph.D., chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine’s Department of Phamacology and Toxicology, and internationally renowned for his research in understanding addiction and drugs of abuse and how they affect the brain, died Sunday in Richmond. Physician-researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center – home to one of the nation's leading cancer palliative care programs -- published a case study in today's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) exploring the role of chemotherapy given in the last phases of life to cancer patients in the United States. James Michael "Jim" Messmer, M.D., is retiring from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine as senior associate dean for medical education, effective June 30. Messmer came to VCU in 1981 as a full-time radiologist in the abdominal imaging area. He has been the school's senior associate dean for the past 16 years. His successor, Dr. Isaac K. "Ike" Wood, takes over July 1. Read more.
