Video Journalist

This person will work closely with our Merchandising and Creative teams. Primary responsibilities include scouting photo shoot locations, creating shot lists, and ensuring all aspects of photo shoots are executed flawlessly. To succeed in this position you must be able to multi-task, work well under pressure, and respond quickly to changing needs. A complete job description is below.


Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:  
•     Attend product turnover meetings for assigned catalog/season to determine sample needs for photography.
•     Work closely with Art Directors to scout locations, create shot lists and schedule shoots.
•     Publish and update shoot schedules on a weekly basis.
•     Distribute photography shot lists; update and redistribute as changes occur.
•     Order samples for photography from stock as necessary.
•     Verify samples are in, follow up with Product Managers on sample status.
•     Facilitate photo shoots on location and in studio.
•     Manage and track photo shoot budgets.
•     Work with Studio Assistant and Grips to pack and label boxes/merchandise.
•     Assist with liquidation of inventory post photography, identifying items to stay in studio or sent to outlet.
•     Process and record invoices related to photo shoot production.
•     Request compensation fee(s) from Accounting for photo location owners and models.
•     Maintain databases for shoot locations, vendors and freelancers.
•     Develop, maintain and book freelance resources, including photographers, stylist/stylist assistants, grips and models.
•     Arrange truck rental (pick-up and drop-offs) as needed.
•     Work with studio staff to keep studio and warehouse clean and organized.
•     Other duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below represent the minimum knowledge, skill, and/or ability required, to perform job function:
•     Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; knowledge of photo production preferred.
•     Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
•     Computer skills essential-ability to use MOSIS, PKMS, Filemaker Pro and Microsoft Excel and other applications as job technology changes.
•     Flexible and results oriented.
•     Excellent communication & interpersonal skills; represents company to location owners and vendors.
•     Excels in team environment.
•     Overnight travel required and the ability to work additional hours during photo shoots.

Description:  
This two-year program is a paid, full-time federal career intern program designed to attract bright, motivated, recent graduates, with either bachelors or masters degrees who are interested in pursuing a career in graphic design and web development budget analysis.  The available position will be filled at the GS-5, GS-7 and GS-9 level.  

During the course of the program, the Visual Information Specialist will contribute to the performs a wide variety of development and enhancement of the consumer education section of ftc.gov as well as a variety of and other sites managed by the FTC.  He or she will produce attractive, professional and effective online, educational products and microsites for a wide range of consumer and business education topics.  He or she will use a variety of software programs to design and produce multi-media outreach pieces (Adobe Creative Suite, XHTML, Javascript, CSS). He or she will often works under tight deadlines and manages multiple projects.  While the person in this job's primary area of expertise will be web-based design, he or she will also will work with fellow designers on projects that will extend across a range of media that may include brochures, reports, bookmarks, posters, magnets, postcards, electronic presentations, cd's, and branding materials for events.  To assist in our multi-faceted outreach efforts, a basic understanding of print design is preferred. 

Qualification Requirement

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study--commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.
Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that demonstrated the skills and creativity needed to use the tools or equipment associated with the work. Because talent and creative ability are vital to successful work performance, samples of work or other suitable evidence of technical competence may be required. Unpaid experience that is pertinent should be credited based upon its relevance to the work of the particular position to be filled. To be qualifying, the work must have involved design and or development of visual and/or interactive communication pieces of information or the application of the principles of artistic design.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for professional design and development of visual and/or interactive communication pieces.  This may include user experience design, web interface design, web development, web strategies for outreach and citizen engagement, and any other form of visual/graphic design the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.

The Federal Career Intern Program is open to all U.S. citizens.  In order to qualify at the GS-5 level, a candidate must have 4 years of course study leading to a Bachelor's degree (or 3 years experience with 1 year of which is equivalent to the GS-4 level in Federal service).  In order to qualify at the GS-7 level, a candidate must have superior academic achievement as a college graduate (Bachelor's degree with a GPA 3.0 or higher) or 1 full year of graduate level education (or equivalent work experience) at the time they start employment.  (Anticipation of the academic qualification or experience before entering on duty is required for application).  In order to qualify at the GS-9 level an applicant must have a Master's degree (or 1 year of experience equivalent to the GS-7).  The FTC will determine whether an applicant is qualified at the GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 level based on OPM's requirements.

Job Description:

Co-op Requirements: Our co-op program requires an individual be a full-time college student, have a formal arrangement with their academic institution, and be able to alternate full-time work and school semesters. The student may alternate between work and study for two or more terms.

Description:
Student will maintain and care for all camera and studio photographic equipment. This includes a full compliment of digital, 35mm, medium-format, and large-format cameras. This also includes an inventory of lenses, studio & portable flash equipment, location equipment and in-house printers. Student will become familiar with and learn how to use all camera equipment and accessories. Student may check out equipment for personal jobs to facilitate this learning process. Student may be required to perform or assist with location and/or studio photography.

Student will maintain an image database in order to fill photographic requests. This includes image storage/retrieval procedures, along with associated filing and record keeping. Student will scan negative and positive images, retouch and prepare images for printing. Photoshop skills are required. Student will gain insight into and practice a digital workflow. He/she must work closely with Imaging Manager, photographers, archivist and graphic designers.
The student will learn large-format scanning of maps, blueprints and posters. He/she will also learn to use large-format inkjet printers for making large display prints and signage.

Student is responsible for ordering and maintaining a working inventory of all expendables such as film, printing papers, inks, binding & laminating supplies, large-format printer supplies, dye-sub printer and photographic accessories. Student may be required to coordinate with outside vendors.

Students will greet customers, take work requests and follow jobs through to completion. Student will also assist customers in usage of high-speed color printer.

Skills:
Must be familiar with and preferably have a working knowledge of:
Adobe Photoshop Photo retouching, composite editing and color management Scanning, both film & flatbed, archiving (asset management), printing and copying Windows XP Must understand the relationship between shutter speed, ISO and f-stop Must be familiar with both digital & film formats, plus medium and large-format cameras Location/Studio/Product/Portraiture/Copy-Work Must have positive communication and superior organizational skills, be mature, motivated, highly productive, and able to maintain a positive attitude. Attention to detail and accuracy is essential. Requires aptitude for computer-graphic applications.

Prefer:
Communication Art or Visual Arts candidates, with emphasis in photography, and at least a 2.8 GPA overall and 3.0 in major. Salary for this full-time position depends on class level at the time of employment.
