Richmond Community News Reporter

Description: The student will be in charge of writing 5-15 stories a month, varying in length, on nonprofit and community issues facing the Greater Richmond Area and, from time to time, state/national news.

Students will be expected to generate story ideas on a regular basis but will also be handed story leads from ConnectNetwork and ConnectRichmond staff. Stories may also develop from community events, symposiums and forums occurring in the region, at which the student will be expected to attend and report out.

Stories will be published weekly on the ConnectRichmond Web site and additional venues as fit. Additional responsibilities might also include day-to-day work with the ConnectNetwork and ConnectRichmond staff. Total work hours will be approximately 10 - 15 hours per week. (This is an unpaid internship.)

Qualifications: Students must have excellent writing, editing and verbal skills as well as a high degree of professionalism. They must be self-starters, willing to take initiative to chase down interviewees and facts with persistency.

Work will be structured by deadlines, so timeliness and ability to work independently is crucial. Students with a genuine interest and knowledge of Richmond's community news and happenings will be strongly preferred.

Description of Organization:
The National Kidney Foundation Serving Virginia, a major voluntary health organization, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

Intern Responsibilities:

• Writing and distributing press releases for programs and events.
• Creating flyers, brochures and mailers for marketing and community education campaigns.
• Assist in the development and implementation of various fund-raising projects.
• Participating in direct marketing/advertising campaigns.
• Compiling and analyzing marketing data to gauge the effectiveness of the marketing program.

Webmaster Job Description

Overview: Organized, creative tech-savvy project coordinator assisting Podium web site designer and chief programmer to ensure integrity of architecture data, web site navigation, links to partner sites and communication of production details within the Podium organization.

FUNCTIONS

• Coordinate and perform computer-based production tasks to facilitate web site releases and updates on the Podium site
• Act as operational liaison between committees such as Executive Committee, Web Site Committee, Development/Events Committee and Programs Committee, documenting all online publication details of web-ready content and requisite approvals
• Data entry of updates, including the scheduling of periodic churn of online content planned as updated portions of the Podium web site, especially in cases such as a people's choice program, requiring the monitoring of statistical user interaction for integrity
• Publish schedule of Podium web site updates within the organization, and monitor all forecasted content refresh frames
• Communicate deadlines and content development timelines throughout Podium organization
• Contribute to web site production process in all stages, ranging from initial conceptualization to final release on the Internet
• Coordinate data files used by production providers such as journal printer and web site creators, maintaining an efficient translation from one data format to the other, thus creating a streamlined "factory approach" from one data format to the other

PBS at the Capitol Internship Program

Community Idea Stations in cooperation with VCU School of Mass Communications offers a hands-on, paid internship program in local television production and is soliciting applicants.
Areas of Emphasis
Individuals are being sought for the Capitol Bureau. The State Capitol Studio serves the governor and the legislature of Virginia, from covering daily proceedings on the Senate floor, to producing news interviews and programs featuring Virginia's politicians. The interns take an active and involved role in assigned productions. Experience in a professional, public broadcast studio will give the intern a comprehensive picture of TV production.
Qualifications and Requirements
• Minimum of major status in school of mass communications
• Computer literate
• Participate in field shoots and carry equipment
• Commit to 10 to 12 hours per week
• Provide own parking and transportation to and from the Capitol
• Successful completion of MASC 366 (TV Production) required; Successful completion of MASC 415 (Advanced TV Production) and MASC 466 (VCU InSight Production) preferred: Successful completion of POLI 321 (Urban Government and Politics), 322 (State and Local Government Politics) or 323 (Virginia Government and Politics) preferred; Previous work experience in production preferred.
Interns Requirements

Summer Internship Program Information / Application
The Virginia Association of Broadcasters (VAB) offers PAID Summer Internship Programs available to students entering their Junior or Senior year ONLY at a college or university that offers undergraduate classes in the following courses of study: Computer Science, Business, Electronic Media, Engineering, Graphic Design and Mass Communications including Advertising, Journalism (print or broadcast), Marketing and Public Relations.

The Summer Internship Program is an 8-week program beginning Monday, June 7, 2010 and ending Friday, July 30, 2010. All interns should plan to work 40-hours per week at $7.25/hour. A total of 32 students statewide will be selected for the program and all interns will be placed at a radio or television station in the state of Virginia. Every effort is made to place a student in their geographical area of preference; however, this cannot be guaranteed.

Only students who are Virginia residents OR a non-resident student currently attending an accredited college or University in the state of Virginia are eligible for the Summer Internship Program.

Rules For Applying
1. In order to qualify for the intern program, applicants must meet the following conditions:
o Good moral character.
o Exhibit grades in previous academic work, which in the judgment of VAB, are adequate to give reasonable assurance of success in completing college.
o Select a course of study relating to a broadcasting career.
o Intent to pursue a career in broadcasting.
o Apply for the grant in the manner outlined herein, and furnish all the information requested on the official application form. Do not send a resume; it will not be used. Only the application will be sent to the judging committee.
2. All applicant forms must be postmarked by February 12, 2010 (please mail; faxes will not be accepted). The application must be completed in full or it will not be considered. Applications postmarked after February 12, 2010 will not be considered.
3. The Virginia Association of Broadcasters will contact applicants selected to receive a summer internship via email and/or phone. It is imperative that emails addresses and telephone numbers are printed legibly on the application.
4. If selected, the applicant will be required to contact the station for which he or she has been paired and to schedule an interview with the assigned station prior to a commitment by the student or station for the internship position.
5. This is an internship program that constitutes a temporary employment relationship with either a radio or television station. As such, accepted applicants will receive limited benefits and will not be eligible for unemployment compensation at the end of the eight (8) week period.

Description of Organization
The Progress-Index, with 12,000 circulation daily and Sunday, is a p.m. paper Monday through Friday and an a.m. on the weekends. The newspaper has been in existence since 1865, but we are a growing multi-media company. Petersburg is a historic town with a growing, vibrant arts community.

Intern Responsibilities
The Progress-Index award-winning sports department is seeking an intern, who is an aggressive self-starter who can find stories and tell them in a compelling way in print and online, to gain valuable experience at a daily. The internship is unpaid, but past interns have walked away with plenty of clips, covering everything from high school sports, Little League and American Legion baseball up to college sports, wooden bat summer baseball to NHRA racing and everything in between. Schedule is flexible but includes nights and weekends.
Must be able to handle multiple assignments, work effectively and productively under deadline pressure. We will allow you to cover those sports you enjoy so that you may develop and grow as a journalist but more importantly have fun along the way.

Intern Qualifications
Applicants should have strong, demonstrated writing and grammar skills and a solid grasp of AP style. Prior experience at college newspaper or freelance is helpful. Also, must have a clear knowledge of all sports and the ability to keep your own statistics during games.
