The Progress-Index, with 12,000 circulation daily and Sunday, is a p.m. paper Monday through Friday and an a.m. on the weekends. The newspaper has been in existence since 1865, but we are a growing multi-media company. Petersburg is a historic town with a growing, vibrant arts community.

Intern Responsibilities
The Progress-Index award-winning sports department is seeking an intern, who is an aggressive self-starter who can find stories and tell them in a compelling way in print and online, to gain valuable experience at a daily. The internship is unpaid, but past interns have walked away with plenty of clips, covering everything from high school sports, Little League and American Legion baseball up to college sports, wooden bat summer baseball to NHRA racing and everything in between. Schedule is flexible but includes nights and weekends.
Must be able to handle multiple assignments, work effectively and productively under deadline pressure. We will allow you to cover those sports you enjoy so that you may develop and grow as a journalist but more importantly have fun along the way.

Intern Qualifications
Applicants should have strong, demonstrated writing and grammar skills and a solid grasp of AP style. Prior experience at college newspaper or freelance is helpful. Also, must have a clear knowledge of all sports and the ability to keep your own statistics during games.

Intern Responsibilities
We are looking for an aggressive self-starter who can find stories and tell them in a compelling way in print and online. Coverage would include breaking news and general assignments. The reporter will be given an opportunity to look beyond daily events and uncover the trends in the coverage area and explain why it matters to readers. Must be able to handle multiple assignments, work effectively and productively under deadline pressure and a have a willingness to develop and grow as a journalist. Qualified candidates will also have an opportunity to work in multi-media with our growing online presence.

Intern Qualifications

Multimedia Journalism Internship

Intern Responsibilities
The multimedia intern is accountable for conceiving, producing and readying multimedia features, including text, audio, video and still images, either for our traditional print product or our online sites.

Intern Qualifications
Applicants should have experience with Photoshop and other software programs in making multimedia presentations such as video, photo galleries and slide shows is necessary. Excellent news judgment, strong technical skills and the ability to work well under deadline pressure are a must. This candidate must be willing to work closely with reporters, designers and editors in a collaborative newsroom environment.

Deadline for 2010 Internship Applications is Nov. 2

PRINCETON, N.J. (Oct. 22, 2009)-- Students have until Nov. 2 to apply online for the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's internship programs for 2010 in multimedia, news and sports copy editing and business reporting.

Applicants in all majors are invited to apply. Candidates apply via the Fund's Web site, https://www.newspaperfund.org , by clicking on "Programs" then "College Internships." Each student must register as an Intern Applicant in order to login and complete application forms. All programs require students to upload a resume and transcript. The editing programs, intended for juniors, seniors and graduate students, require a 500-word essay explaining why the applicant is the best candidate for the position and a one-hour editing exam. Tests have been sent in bulk to 350 on-campus test monitors. Students on campuses without designated monitors must email the Fund at djnf@dowjones.com to request the test be sent to a professor at their college. A list of monitors is posted on the Web site.

Business reporting applicants can be sophomores, juniors or seniors. They must also upload three to five clips, write 500 words on why they want to cover business news and take a reporting test by Dec. 1. They must list the professor who has volunteered to administer the exam on their application form.

International students and U.S. students studying abroad are eligible to apply; professional journalists and recent graduates are not.

News organizations are asked to request interns by Dec. 1. The students will be trained by the Fund before reporting to work. The training cost to participating news organizations is $1,200 per intern for news and sports editing and $1,000 per intern for multimedia and business reporting. This represents about 50 percent of the overall program cost, with the rest provided by DJNF. News organizations agree to pay a minimum salary of $350 a week for a minimum of 10 weeks.

Marketing Internship

Richmond magazine is accepting applications for marketing internships in the spring (Jan. through May), summer (June through August.) and fall (Sept. through Dec.) The deadline for spring applications is Dec. 8; summer applications are due April 1; fall applications are due August 8.

Responsibilities:
Marketing interns will gain firsthand experience in the promotion of Richmond magazine. Interns may be asked to do research, assist in setting up and staffing promotional events, work with our circulation manager, and help out with other office duties.

Qualifications:
A background in marketing, public relations, or communications; must be well-organized, reliable and resourceful; must be computer proficient in Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer. Three month commitment of 20 hours minimum per month is required.

Application:
Internships are not paid. Interns must receive college credit, and will be acknowledged in the magazine's masthead.
