The Orange County Register offers up to 25 college internships each year, including 10 conducted in concert with professional organizations. For college students aspiring to become newspaper journalists. The opportunity to spend a summer working in a professional newsroom can greatly enhance job prospects. Each summer, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram offers this
opportunity to a select group of students. The Star-Telegram, a Knight Ridder newspaper, has a circulation of 240,000 weekday and 335,000 Sundays. The intern program is ideal for students looking to gain daily
newspaper experience. Interns work for 10 weeks, usually beginning the first week in June and ending in early August. Interns are paid $10 an hour and receive reimbursement for mileage accumulated while on assignments. Our Summer intern program is open to undergraduates (rising seniors and graduating seniors) and to graduates who have received their degrees in the past 12 months. Since we require our interns to work full-time, the Fall and Spring programs are open only to students who have graduated. All of our internships are designed for applicants who can work a five-day, 35-hour week. You don’t have to be studying journalism, or indeed any particular subject, and you don’t need your school’s endorsement to apply. There are three terms: SUMMER – June through August. FALL – September through December. SPRING – January through May. We currently pay interns $10 per hour. Entertainment Weekly interns answer phones, make copies, send faxes – the usual entry-level stuff. Summer internships will be awarded. The internships may be filled in any newsroom function: local news, sports, business, features, copy desk, photo or graphics. Teamwork is underscored at every level in our newsroom: in the group of senior editors, in groups of team editors, in teams of reporters, copy editors and photographers. It's pretty simple: More brains are better than one. Better ideas mean better results. The readers win. Our interns win. You'll be assigned real work: reporting, creating graphics, shooting photographs and copy editing stories. You'll need your own car (we reimburse for mileage). To expose you to different aspects of newsroom operations, you will handle assignments from various subject areas. Each intern is assigned a mentor and will participate in team meetings and in brown bag programs on topical subjects. Past sessions have included journalism values, self-editing, how to read a financial report, investigative reporting/the paper chase and thinking visually. ELIGIBILITY: The programs are generally aimed at - but not limited to - rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates. Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting
September 4, 2007 - June 29, 2008
These 10-month fellowships support six minority journalists to study marine and environmental science, beginning with an environmental justice workshop and four weeks of independent study with mentorship at the University of Rhode Island, and to report on the environment for nine months with mentorship at one of six news outlets, which may include: Talk of the Nation: Science Friday; National Geographic Television; The Providence Journal; Earth and Sky Radio Series; NOVA Science Television/NOVA Online; Christian Science Monitor; and NPR-member station, WBUR. This fellowship is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Eligibility

Diversity Fellowships are available to six racial/ethnic minority journalists from all media with U.S. citizenship. A mimimum of two years of professional journalism experience is required.

Prize
Workshop tuition, a $28,000 stipend, and some travel support for each fellow.

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund is inviting college students to apply for its 2007 online editing internship program, which rejoins the sports copy editing and general news copy editing roster of programs. For the 13 th year, the Fund will seek applicants for its business reporting internship program.

The fund expects to select more than 100 interns as online editors and general news and sports copy editors. At least 12 internships will be offered to minority college sophomores and juniors who will work as business reporters at news organizations.

Applicants for the editing programs must submit the form, a résumé, a typed list of courses and grades and an essay describing why a media recruiter would find the applicant a perfect copy editor.

Online, news, and sports editing applicants must take the Controlled Editing Exam from college professors called monitors. They are listed on the web site at http://djnewspaperfund.dowjones.com/fund/cs_monitorlist.asp . Applicants must take the test before Nov. 1. A student who does not have a designated campus monitor must ask a professor to administer the test and arrange by Oct. 24 th , to have an exam sent to that professor.

Business reporting interns submit the form, a résumé, a typed list of courses and grades, three to five recent clips and an essay describing why they want to write about business for the summer. A reporting test, devised by the Fund, is sent to professors asked to serve as proctors by the applicants.
