Media General is a multimedia company located in Richmond, Virginia, operating leading newspapers, television stations and online enterprises primarily in the Southeastern United States.

The Intern Program for the Sales & Strategic Marketing Department at Media General would enlist intern(s) for specific business-model project testing.

This is a paid summer internship program; Hours to be determined.

Below are the selected test projects:

1. Creating Database Marketing Turn-key Services for Clients

Description: Student would engage in various techniques in order to analyze a customer’s database. These techniques would be profiling customers by utilizing our current vendor relationships, learning analysis; mapping the clients customers and non-customers in MapPoint; and developing a pricing package for potential advertisers to purchase this service from Media General. The student may also learn online surveying software as another potential business offering. Student would work with test clients to develop a business case to be presented at the end of the internship.

Skill Set: Analytical/Process Oriented, Solid Computer Skills (Excel, MapPoint, PowerPoint); Strong Communicator; Good Listening Skills.

2. Developing Direct Marketing Services Program and MediaGeneralDirect.

Description: Student would work with selected newspaper markets to test direct mail services program. This would include working with various vendors to help facilitate the program, order data as needed, training of sales reps, facilitating creative sales materials; making recommendations to changes in the program based on newspaper feedback. In addition, this student would also help to build out ideas for the formulation of MediaGeneralDirect.com future Web site where a number of services for businesses would be offered.

Skill Set: Graphic Design/Web Design Skills (Quark, HTML); Multi-Tasker; Strong Communicator; Detail Oriented

Job Description: Assist the Video Editor/Producer in all aspects of video production for the organization. Main job will entail taking raw footage from our studio recordings and laying it into a time line and handling all aspects of a rough edit, preparing each piece for a final edit; other job responsibilities include helping with creative input for each piece, searching for other media files, i.e. music and still frames, to be added to the projects and helping on shoot days with studio set up and recording.

Required Skills: Knowledge of the Final Cut Pro Studio Suite

Preferred skills: Knowledge of Motion, Photoshop or other design programs within the Adobe Creative Suite would be helpful.
