Description of intern assignments:

Intern tasks vary from day to day. Opportunities include marketing , writing for TV, research, setting up interviews, logging, archiving and requesting video, making phone calls, copies and sending packages.

The intern will gain a basic understanding of all roles required to produce and deliver television shows based on the newspaper content. Our staff will assign tasks and projects on a daily or weekly basis.

Qualifications:

· Strong writing and research skills

· Effective written and verbal communication

· Good attitude with the desire and ability to learn quickly.

Internship objectives:

· To learn the different elements involved in producing national broadcast products for air.

· To learn and contribute to the ways multi-media convergence can evolve and grow at the Nation’s newspaper.

The trainee will gain a solid understanding of how television is produced and delivered and how different platforms add dimension to the stories being told. The trainee will learn about writing for television and how to visualize and produce a complete broadcast quality product.

Hands-on training with regular feedback helps one to understand the demands of the job within the actual fast-paced, deadline oriented work environment. It will hone decision-making skills and news judgment.

This is an unpaid internship for school credit. You will be asked to provide documentation from your school showing that you will receive school credit for successful completion of this internship. The work schedule is flexible.

Richmond Magazine - Marketing Internship

Marketing Internship Program:

Richmond magazine is accepting applications for marketing internships in the spring (Jan. through May), summer (June through August.) and fall (Sept. through Dec.) The deadline for spring applications is Dec. 8; summer applications are due April 1; fall applications are due September 5th.

Responsibilities:
Marketing interns will gain firsthand experience in the promotion of Richmond magazine. Interns may be asked to do research, assist in setting up and staffing promotional events, work with our circulation manager, and help out with other office duties.

Qualifications:
A background in marketing, public relations, or communications; must be well-organized, reliable and resourceful; must be computer proficient in Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer. Three month commitment of 20 hours minimum per month is required.

Internships are not paid. Interns must receive college credit, and will be acknowledged in the magazine's masthead.

VCU School of Mass Communications - Web Writer
Looking for a flexible gig that allows you to earn credit and pump of your web writing skills? The VCU School of Mass Communications is seeking an intern to serve as a writer for its web site. This two-credit internship will begin in September 2008 and conclude in December 2008.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The web writer works with Mass Comm staff and faculty to plan and write content for the web site’s home page and News You Can Use blog, as well as deepening and developing content for the pages within the web site. This position reports to the School of Mass Communications’ web coordinator. Both the web coordinator and the intern work remotely, and on their own equipment and telephone.

QUALIFICATIONS
The web writer works mostly remotely, occasionally coming on-site to collaborate with Mass Comm faculty and staff. Qualifications include:
* Full-time or part-time Mass Comm student
* Demonstrated ability to write for the Web site—you’ll need to show samples of your work
* Strong interpersonal, communications and writing skills
* Faculty recommendation—only responsive and self-directed students will be successful in this role, so please be prepared to secure a faculty recommendation attesting to your work ethic
* Persistence in gathering content for the web
* Initiative and ability to work independently
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
* An e-mail address and telephone number where you can be reached easily (and sometimes frequently)
* Your own computer equipment and appropriate software
* Some experience with HTML, Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash or Photoshop is a plus, but it’s not required
* Photography experience is a plus, but it’s not required

Description of Organization:
The School of Mass Communications offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in advertising, public relations and journalism. It is part of the College of Humanities and Sciences at VCU. The School enrolls almost 1,200 undergraduates and 250 graduate students, and has a full-time faculty of 20 with as many as 20 professional practitioners teaching part-time as adjuncts. The School’s 4,200 alumni work all over the country and even internationally in advertising, public relations and journalism.

General duties of the Public Relations Intern:
• Research and write news and feature stories and personal profiles for the School’s twice-yearly alumni newsletter that is distributed both by mail in hard copy format and electronically.
• Take or obtain photos to illustrate alumni newsletter stories.
• Design and prepare for printing invitations to alumni and professional friends of the School to School events.
• Assist the School’s Assistant Director for Development and the College of Humanities and Sciences’ Director of Development with outreach to alumni.

Qualifications applicants should possess:
• Strong writing skills, particularly in journalism and public relations formats.
• Ability to work under and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, depending on the circumstances.
• An understanding of appropriate business environment and behavior.
• Must have completed MASC 323 and MASC 333 or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Availability and compensation:
This internship is available in Fall, Spring and Summer terms. Preference will be given to applicants who wish to earn 3 credits and thus would work approximately 15 hours per week. The intern’s supervisor will be a full-time faculty member.

The student chosen for this internship will receive $500, credited to the student’s VCU account.
