General duties of the Public Relations Intern:
• Research and write news and feature stories
• Design and write copy for brochures and marketing materials
• Coordination of ongoing partner programs and events
• Website content maintenance
• Create a donor database
Qualifications:
• Strong writing skills
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• An understanding of appropriate business behavior
• Must have completed MASC 323 and MASC 333 or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to use design software a plus.
Availability and compensation:
Preference will be given to applicants who wish to earn 3 credits and thus would work approximately 15 hours per week. The intern’s supervisor will be a full-time PR faculty member.
The student chosen for this internship will receive $500, credited to the student’s VCU account.

Charity Family Life is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1993 to serve children in Richmond’s underserved population. The organization provides an after school program that offers tutoring, enrichment and hot meals. In addition, CFL is a SES Title I provider and offers in-school tutoring to several area elementary and middle schools.

Job description:
The applicant will perform various marketing and public relations duties as needed. He or she must be able to write and produce newsletters, press releases, power point presentations and more. He or she will also help to transform the newsletter from paper to electronic, and edit and enhance the mailing list. The applicant will report to the Executive Director and will receive training from the Executive Director as well as the Communications Consultant.

Training: The applicant will learn the basic operations of a non-profit organization. He or she will learn how to create printed materials to target a variety of audiences. The intern will learn how to plan and execute projects that will reinforce the development department. He or she will learn about the services the organization has to offer and how to market them to the community, the media and corporate foundations.

Benefits:
Upon completion of a satisfactory performance, the intern will have several marketing materials that they have created that can be used in a portfolio. In addition to gaining valuable job experience that can be utilized on a resume, the Executive Director will also provide a letter of recommendation.

GET A NIGHTLIFE LLC INTERNSHIP

The Get A Nightlife LLC Internship program is a dynamic, fun, and unique opportunity for Advertising and Marketing majors to get hands on experience in the nightlife-advertising field. Interns will be working directly with the Executive Director and the Director of Operations of NightlifeVirginia.com.
NightlifeVirginia.com is the most comprehensive, one-stop, online nightlife resource guide for Virginia. Throughout the state, tens of thousands of consumers utilize NightlifeVirginia.com to find out which bars, clubs, concert venues, and restaurants are most popular from night to night. In addition, NightlifeVirginia.com provides useful information including hours of operation, directions, food/drink specials and on-location photo albums.
Intern Responsibilities:
Interns are expected to assist in a wide range of duties from planning and consulting for advertising accounts, researching the effectiveness of marketing and advertising strategies, designing and planning marketing and advertising strategies, increasing brand awareness for both the website and individual accounts, to standard office duties such as answering phones, data entry, billing, and maintaining project files.
Intern Qualifications
Intern applicants must be 21 years old, be very familiar with the use of computers, have excellent people skills, be highly motivated, and want to have fun while learning!

These internships are available year round and while the internship is not paid, Get A Nightlife LLC will pay all expenses incurred by interns as a result of internship duties. The Get A Nightlife LLC office is located approximately 7 miles from the VCU campus.

Description of Organization: The National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias , a major voluntary health organization, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.
Intern Responsibilities:
· Creating print advertising utilizing Microsoft and Adobe software
· Creating flyers, brochures and mailers for marketing and community education campaigns
· Participating in direct marketing/advertising campaigns
· Updating and maintaining the foundation’s website

MET Internships


The Allen Rosenshine Minority Education & Training (MET) Fund awards internships to minorities, women and individuals protected under the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act to encourage the pursuit of careers in advertising. The program was launched in an effort to improve the level of diversity in the advertising industry.

BBDO will award several MET Fund internships for the summer of 2009 across our U.S. offices located in: New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Interns receive a $4,000 stipend for the ten-week internship. If you are selected as an intern, we will try to place you in the office of your choice, but this is not guaranteed.
Applicants must:
• Be a high school senior, enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year academic institution, or graduate student
• Be in academically good standing as defined by your academic institution
• Have a GPA of 3.0 or greater
• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
• Complete application form
• Submit two (2) original signed letters of recommendation
• Submit a copy of most recent transcript
• Write a minimum 250-word essay explaining why you want to be in advertising
