Social and Multi Media Internship

The Richmond SPCA is seeking an intern for the Spring 2010 semester. This internship provides excellent opportunities to gain experience in the nonprofit arena and to develop your portfolio. Intern will work within the development and community relations department, which handles the following roles for the organization: fundraising, marketing, and public/media relations. Primary responsibilities will include using multimedia and social media tools to promote Richmond SPCA programs, services and events. Applicants should have use of their own digital camera and laptop.

Description of the Organization:
The Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), founded in 1891, is a non-profit, no-kill humane organization. As a national leader in humane care and education, the Richmond SPCA is aggressively tackling the problem of pet overpopulation through education, adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter. The organization saves the lives of 3,000 homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 cats and dogs daily. For more information, please visit www.richmondspca.org.

General job duties of intern:
 Create visual and audio slide shows/movies for use online.
 Take photographs of events and services for web and other uses (camera not provided).
 Conduct and record audio interviews of events and services for web and other uses (equipment provided).
 Assist with social media (help post to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube).
 Assist with promoting special events and programs.
 Provide general office, event and project support.

Desired skills for this internship:
 Experience with video, audio and general media editing and production.
 Strong writing skills.
 Social media experience/savvy.
 Some graphic design experience (PhotoShop, Quark, etc.).
 Photography experience.
 Flexibility.
 Basic HTML and web editing skills.

Compensation:
The position is unpaid. However, it is eligible for class credit if approved by VCU. Hours are flexible but a minimum of 5 hours per week is required.
