AOL Patch: Reporting, editing, PR internships

One of the bright spots in today's media landscape is Patch, a nationwide network of websites affiliated with AOL. Patch has hired hundreds of journalists -- including VCU graduates -- to write stories, shoot photos, produce videos and slide shows, and engage readers with social media. Patch describes itself as "a community-specific news, information and engagement platform dedicated to providing comprehensive and trusted local coverage. With a network of more than 800 sites driven by a growing number of passionate and experienced leaders in journalism and new media, Patch is poised to become the largest online local news and information outlet in the country."

Moreover, Patch has a program called PatchU that partners with universities. (VCU was one of the first partners.) Through PatchU, VCU journalism students have attended free webinars and landed paid freelance assignments, covering stories in Richmond for Patch websites. I'll keep VCU mass comm students informed about those opportunities later this fall.

Here are opportunities that Patch just announced -- internships for Summer 2012. These are paid, full-time, hands-on 10-week internships -- open to rising juniors and seniors and to recent graduates. I'm pasting the information below. Patch will be accepting internship applications between Nov. 1 and Jan. 15 (meaning you still have time to build your portfolio and polish your resume).

Patch has websites across the U.S.; the company is especially strong in Northern Virginia communities such as Woodbridge. Patch also is seeking summer interns for its headquarters in the SoHo area of New York City.
