Scripps Howard Foundation - Washington Program

March 21 is the deadline for students to apply for the Scripps Howard Foundation’s fall 2008 Semester in Washington Program. With the election and the start of plans for the inauguration, fall will be an especially interesting time to be a reporter in Washington.

I hope you will encourage junior and senior journalism students to apply. We just raised our stipend to $2,350 for the 14-week program and house students at no cost to them in apartments near the National Zoo in Northwest Washington. In recent years, some students have told me they are reluctant to apply for fall or spring internships for fear they will lose scholarships or delay their graduation dates. I’m hoping that faculty and administrators at journalism schools can help students figure out how to keep their scholarships and graduate (nearly) on time. Some students can get internship credit, and others take online courses or do an independent study course in journalism or political science while they are D.C. I’m happy to do whatever evaluations and paperwork they need.

Students in our program get coffee only for themselves – and it’s free. They spend the entire program reporting and writing stories that are posted on our Web-based wire and available to any news organization. We work with several newspapers. They can also report for a hometown paper. Some of their stories are made available to the Scripps Howard News Service and its 400 client newspapers. We tour Washington journalism and government institutions and attend programs similar to one we attended the other night – a lively discussion featuring the NPR and the Washington Post’s ombudsmen.

I’m attaching a flier with more information about the program that you can post or hand to students. The application form and other information about our program is on our Web site: www.shfwire.com
