Deadline for 2010 Internship Applications is Nov. 2

PRINCETON, N.J. (Oct. 22, 2009)-- Students have until Nov. 2 to apply online for the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's internship programs for 2010 in multimedia, news and sports copy editing and business reporting.

Applicants in all majors are invited to apply. Candidates apply via the Fund's Web site, https://www.newspaperfund.org , by clicking on "Programs" then "College Internships." Each student must register as an Intern Applicant in order to login and complete application forms. All programs require students to upload a resume and transcript. The editing programs, intended for juniors, seniors and graduate students, require a 500-word essay explaining why the applicant is the best candidate for the position and a one-hour editing exam. Tests have been sent in bulk to 350 on-campus test monitors. Students on campuses without designated monitors must email the Fund at djnf@dowjones.com to request the test be sent to a professor at their college. A list of monitors is posted on the Web site.

Business reporting applicants can be sophomores, juniors or seniors. They must also upload three to five clips, write 500 words on why they want to cover business news and take a reporting test by Dec. 1. They must list the professor who has volunteered to administer the exam on their application form.

International students and U.S. students studying abroad are eligible to apply; professional journalists and recent graduates are not.

News organizations are asked to request interns by Dec. 1. The students will be trained by the Fund before reporting to work. The training cost to participating news organizations is $1,200 per intern for news and sports editing and $1,000 per intern for multimedia and business reporting. This represents about 50 percent of the overall program cost, with the rest provided by DJNF. News organizations agree to pay a minimum salary of $350 a week for a minimum of 10 weeks.

The 2010 Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program is accepting applications for spring and summer. Interns report for 10 or 14 weeks on a variety of D.C. news and politics. Internship Position: Editorial Assistant & Calendar Editor

Internship description:
The reporter/contributor intern will become an integral part of the RVANews staff, working with our team a minimum of 10 hours per week to brainstorm and develop content for our website. He/she is expected to submit 1-2 feature stories (600 to 800 words) per week, 2 major investigative pieces (including research, interviews, quotes, photographs, etc.) per semester, in addition to assisting with the daily and weekly development and implementation of our regular content.

This internship will also involve assisting with the maintenance of the RVANews event calendar. This aspect of the job requires data entry, but also presents the opportunity to add an editorial spin as the intern will help with the selection of the RVANews's weekly top picks of Richmond happenings.

The intern will be held to the standards of style, accuracy, fairness, and deadlines maintained by RVANews. He/she will be responsible for completing necessary research, making contacts, and establishing sources during the internship period, and will be expected to develop stories that are of interest to the community.

As this position includes regular updates to the RVANews Web site, an understanding of Wordpress is preferred.

This position will be based out of our office located on the 1200 block of W. Main Street. Some local travel may be required for the completion of research and interviews. The intern must be able to provide his/her own transportation.

The position is unpaid. However, it is eligible for class credit if approved by VCU. Hours are flexible but a minimum of 10 hours per week is required.

Henrico Citizen Journalism Internship

Description of Organization: The Henrico Citizen is Henrico County's award-winning, hometown
newspaper, published twice monthly with a circulation of 35,000 per month. The newspaper also has an online home, HenricoCitizen.com.

Intern Responsibilities: A reporting/copy editing intern will have the opportunity to perform a number
of duties, including developing story ideas, covering assigned topics and events, taking photographs, editing copy for special and regular sections, compiling Q&A profiles with community residents, working on long-term projects and more.

Intern Qualifications: Candidates should have strong journalism backgrounds and should be enrolled in journalism courses. Participation in the Capital News Service and/or on a college newspaper staff is beneficial. Interns should possess strong writing and interviewing skills and have a desire to improve those skills through the internship.

Other: This internship is available year-round and is unpaid. The Henrico Citizen is located just north of downtown Richmond in Lakeside.
