VCU Massey Cancer Center recognized by U.S. News as Richmond's only nationally ranked cancer care provider

Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center provides the only nationally ranked cancer care in Richmond, Va., according to U.S. News & World Report.

For the first time, U.S. News ranked the hospitals in America's 52 largest metropolitan areas. Ranking at the top of all 20 hospitals in the Richmond metro area is VCU Medical Center, which includes Massey's oncology patient care.

VCU Medical Center is the only hospital in Richmond with four nationally ranked specialties, including cancer care at Massey, which ranked 38th in the country. VCU Medical Center was also high-performing in nine other specialties, more than any other hospital in the area.

"VCU Massey Cancer Center is proud to be nationally recognized for its cutting-edge cancer care advanced through ground-breaking research," said Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center. "The U.S. News ranking is one of many indications of the impact we are making in Richmond and beyond."

The new rankings recognized 622 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties. U.S. News ranked hospitals within U.S. metro areas with populations of 1 million or more, using existing data from 2010-11 Best Hospitals. The rankings are based upon many factors, including patient safety and reputation with more than 9,000 specialists.

"To be ranked the No. 1 hospital in Richmond is a testament to the remarkable care our exceptional team at VCU Medical Center provides our patients," said Sheldon M. Retchin, M.D., M.S.P.H., CEO of the VCU Health System and vice president of VCU Health Sciences. "We are committed to discovering new and better medical treatments and that dedication to innovation is saving and improving the lives of our patients."
