Taylor & Carpenter Article

In the Taylor and Carpenter article, they discuss uses of hypertext with students at a variety of levels. Have any of you used hypertext with students? If so, what were your experiences? What was rewarding about it and what was a challenge? What grade do you think would be good to introduce students to hypertext? How could you work with this concept if you do not have computers in yoru classroom? What do you think about hypertext?

This is a link to the Tinderbox program that they describe. Note that you need to buy it if you want to use it at home, but it is installed on the computers in the lab in Hibbs.

I read a thesis written by Talitha Church who graduated a few years ago from our program. She successfully used Inspiration (a program like Tinderbox) with elementary students. I think that you can use it with students of any age because the approach and the teaching strategies you use are what facilitates the learning.
I taught our 402 class how to use Tinderbox. Most of them were apprehensive about the program but found that they really appreciated the opportunities of thinking in different ways that the program offered. I find that you can't really teach someone how to use the program, you have to just show them the basics and let them figure the rest out on their own.

You don't actually have to buy the software if you want to use it at home. You can just download the demo and use that to make changes to the Tinderbox files that you create at school in the lab. If you make extra blank notes, then you can alter them with the demo, but you are limited to the number of new notes you can create with the demo.
