Teacher Tube

Just found this website called Teacher Tube and it's basically what it sounds like - an education and safe YouTube(ish) site. The problem is that most of the videos that I watched are not that great. I'm guessing that they were created by geezers like me. What would happen if they were created by the young whippersnappers who make the interesting content that is on YouTube?

How could a teacher incorporate video making into an art classroom? Are there alternatives that anyone can think of for meaningful artmaking related to video art? I think George Szkelley (not sure that's spelled correctly) has a book about art education and video art.

I guess my ultimate point is that when the technologies of Web 2.0 are taken from being "out" there and being a bit messy and chaotic and then they are brought into a safe space, do they stay as good? Is our fear of anythign unmoderated so great that we can convince ourselves that we should avoid anything that is not "teacher approved?"

Anyone else have thoughts about what happens when you take a social type of computer technology and restrict it to certain users with certain ideas?

I think the good part about Teacher Tube is that many teachers can access it whereas most schools have blocked YouTube for obvious reasons. So, what this means is that teachers who are concerned about the content of TeacherTube can upload their own videos, even captures ones from YouTube that are appropriate and post them up on Teacher Tube so that others can benefit from it. Programs like SnapZ make it easy to capture video clips.

I agree that it is problematic that the content is lacking. Maybe we can motivate preservice teachers to use that site and put up some interesting content.

I had not considered the issue of blocking. That's a good point and may be why this is a popular site. Did you find the content compelling?

It's interesting to me that we are so scared to show or do anything in school that might offend. However, at home, we know that students are looking at these sites, etc. I know it's an issue of parental rights and tacit endorsement of content, etc. But, it's interesting to me still.

It is really good idea. In my opinion it would be useful students and teachers.

Excellent write up, very interesting read!

It really is a challenge, but teachers also have to learn some new modes of teaching for today's generation.

The good thing about Teachertube is that anyone would feel comfortable posting a video. Some of the best teaching videos I have seen have been simple pieces done by teachers.

I feel the idea is an excellent one and I cannot wait to see what comes out of it. Everyone should have a fair chance at equal education.
