Data Mashups and REsearch

On p. 4 in the Educase Report, they write about data mashups. Though I've heard of this term before, I was not really clear on what it meant before reading this. What it makes me wonder about is how data mashups could be a form of educational research? Or, could they be? What is it about "mashing up" data that can reveal new insights?

Later, on p. 6, they talk about the visual representations of data that may be possible. This could be a form of data analysis. But, who creates the "mashup" and how is it created?
