I do not think that a 300 lbs candidate would have a chance against someone attractive and well built. The fact that the current presidential race is focused on Hillary Clinton's "likability" and the sex and skin color of the candidates should be a pretty good indication that our society is focused on appearances. I have heard many people make their decision on who to vote for based on who "looks trustworthy".
However, et's not forget the impact that radio surely had. I am certain that the first time people heard their candidates speak, many views were changed. Not only because often someone who writes very beautifully cannot articulate themselves as well when asked to speak in public, but also because some people just have more pleasing voices.
Everyone thinks they are a good judge of character, and things like appearance, the way someone dresses or speaks, are all ways we judge that character.

I didn't think of that, I' agree with you that radio probably did have a big effect on people's perceptions of trustworthy candidates.
