Question

I doubt america would vote for any person who was horribly obese. The first reason is that many people judge things by their appearance and generally judge obese people negatively. Secondly, the health of the candidate would probably come into question. No one wants a president that would likely have problems with his job due to illnesses related to obesity. That being said, many overweight people have served and still do serve in high places of our government. An example that comes to mind is Newt Gingrich who while being overweight was able to secure the position of speaker of the house not that long ago.

Judging things based on their appearance is neither always wrong or always right. That moral decision is based on the circumstances of the decision (and also your definition of right and wrong). I think people should be judged on the content of their character but if this is true how does an addiction play into the judgment of a persons character. If someone is addicted to something (like food) is this a weakness of character? Does it show the psychological potential for other negative addictions? How would you know if it truly was an addiction or a genetic disorder?
