VCU School of Nursing has received a grant from the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation to expand its RN-BS Weekend Program to the Fredericksburg area. Dr. Martha W. Moon, RN-BS Program Director reports, "This grant is the culmination of a long planning process involving VCU and stakeholders in the Fredericksburg area. There is a lot of interest in having BS-prepared nurses serving the patients in the Medicorp service area. We are delighted to be working closely with our colleagues there to make the RN-BS program more available to nurses in the area."
It’s no secret that we face a critical shortage of nurses. Bureau of Labor statistics indicate that our nation will need 1.2 million more nurses by 2014. By 2020, Virginia alone will need 22,000 new nurses – meaning that without increases in nursing education enrollment, one in three Virginians will not have a nurse to care for them.
