President-elect Mike Rao speaks at VCU campus forums

Virginia Commonwealth University President-elect Mike Rao visited with students, faculty and staff on Wednesday and Thursday, March 4 and 5, during his first return visit to the campus since his appointment was announced last month.

Rao, who takes over as president of Virginia’s largest university on July 1, was meeting both days with groups on the Monroe Park Campus and the MCV Campus. He spoke of his impression of VCU and how its diversity, the scope of research and the commitment to the community appealed to him.

“I’m very excited about the diversity of Richmond,” Rao said. “There is a unique opportunity for VCU to make connections with the community — the community is an exceptional resource. You can do what you do nationally very well and still advance opportunities in the region and at home.”

After each forum, he fielded questions regarding gender diversity of faculty, how his administration will engage with students and how he plans to move the strategic plan forward.

“I’m truly looking forward to hearing what you think we should do together to continue moving the university forward,” said Rao, calling the forums “the beginning of a really good conversation.”

Rao, 42, currently is president of Central Michigan University. At VCU, he also will be president of the VCU Health System and a tenured professor in the VCU School of Education.

He was selected to follow VCU President Eugene P. Trani, Ph.D., who is retiring June 30 after 19 years at the helm. Trani will remain at VCU as University Distinguished Professor.

Meet VCU President-elect Dr. Michael Rao

Virginia Commonwealth University students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to meet Michael Rao, Ph.D., who will become VCU's fifth president on July 1, at one of the following sessions:

Monroe Park Campus
Wednesday, March 4, 4:15 p.m.

Rao will offer remarks and answer questions before meeting faculty, staff and students at receptions following both sessions.

Rao, 42, comes to VCU with the experience of three successful presidencies at universities of increasing size and complexity.

“Michael Rao’s accomplishments are remarkable,” said VCU Rector Tom Rosenthal. “Members of the board, the Presidential Search Committee and others representing university groups who have met Mike are excited about the energy, enthusiasm and intelligence he will bring to VCU as its fifth president.”

Rosenthal said the board’s decision was unanimous and comes after an extensive process that sought input from the entire university community about VCU’s future and the type of person who should be its next president. A 17-member, university-wide presidential search committee used that information as it conducted a national search and forwarded recommendations to the VCU Board of Visitors.

“I am truly honored to be appointed VCU’s next president. This is the only position I have pursued, and it is because VCU is a dynamic and diverse university in a vibrant city,” Rao said. “It is very clear that VCU is an institution of opportunity with great momentum. I am excited to work with all its stakeholders to carry that momentum forward as we fulfill an important mission as a leading urban research university, with high quality, well-integrated academic programs and a preeminent academic medical center.”

Board of Visitors appoints Dr. Michael Rao as VCU’s next president

February 20, 2009

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

It is my distinct pleasure and honor to announce that the Board of Visitors has appointed Michael Rao, Ph.D., as VCU’s next president and president of the VCU Health System.

Dr. Rao, 42, comes to VCU with the experience of three successful presidencies at universities of increasing size and complexity. I know that members of the Board, the Presidential Search Committee and others representing university groups who have met Mike are excited about the energy, enthusiasm and intelligence he will bring to VCU as its fifth president.

The Board established an extensive process that received considerable input from our entire university community about the future direction of this institution and the type of individual who would best be able to lead us to achieve our mission and vision. Under the very able leadership of former Rector Ed Bersoff, the Search Committee, comprised of faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University, sought candidates who could meet this challenge. Mike was recommended unanimously by the committee. The Board’s decision to appoint Mike as VCU’s next president also was unanimous.

Mike brings a broad range of educational experience to VCU, including experience as the president of a large doctoral research university, university chancellor, president of a two-year college and a college dean. He also has served in the private sector as a higher education academic program planner.

Most recently, he has served as president and professor of Central Michigan University since 2000 and is one of the three longest-serving presidents among Michigan’s 15 public universities. Before CMU, Mike was chancellor of Montana State University-Northern and president of Mission College in Santa Clara, California.

In less than six years combined, he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of South Florida and a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Florida.

During exhaustive reference checks with Mike’s colleagues, the three adjectives used most to describe him were energetic, intelligent and transformative. I am convinced that he will be a catalyst to build on the outstanding legacy that Dr. Trani will leave, assuring that we continue to meet the needs of our community for world class education, research and patient care.

Mike will be coming back to VCU in a few weeks to meet with the university and health system communities at open meetings on both campuses. I am sure you will find him to be as impressive as the Board and Search Committee members found him to be.

Mike will be moving to Richmond with his wife, Monica, a professional watercolorist and graphic designer, and their two sons, Miguel, 9, and Aiden, 9 months old.

Please join me in giving the entire Rao family a warm welcome to VCU and to the Richmond community.

Sincerely,
Tom Rosenthal, Rector

From the Rector to the University and VCU Health System communities

    September 17, 2008

Dear University and Health System Communities:

It is my pleasure to announce the membership of the Presidential Search Committee that will work with the Board of Visitors toward the appointment of VCU's fifth president. Dr. Ed Bersoff, immediate former Rector of the Board, will chair the committee, and I will serve ex-officio. Dr. Rosalyn S. Hobson, associate dean for graduate studies and associate professor of electrical engineering in the VCU School of Engineering, will serve as vice chair. There are seventeen members, that include five other members of the Board of Visitors, five faculty members, two staff members, two students, one alumnus and one member of a VCU foundation. The press release announcing the committee membership is below.

The committee members were selected from nominations provided by the Faculty Senate, the Staff Senate, and from the leadership of the other key stakeholders. I anticipate that a search firm will be identified by mid-October, and the Board and Presidential Search Committee will work with the Board's presidential search and transition adviser, Dr. Steve Portch.

I will keep the university and health system communities informed about the details concerning the remaining open forums that will be held in early October with Dr. Portch. I will also communicate by email when there are significant milestones in the search process.

I encourage you to keep in touch with the search through the presidential search Web site, http://www.presidentialsearch.vcu.edu. On the Web site you will find an easy and confidential way to write Dr. Bersoff and Dr. Portch.

    Sincerely,
    Tom Rosenthal, Rector
