The College English syllabus includes four entries, over the course of the semester, for CAI, Computer Assisted Instruction. Students go to a computer lab where they either work on exercises from the textbook or they watch television programs that are stored on the server. Most students opt for the latter. The most popular television series are Prison Break, Desperate Housewives, Friends, and Growing Pains,.

Can they watch any sci-fi? Ted and I LOVE Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi channel. It is very dark and has lots of serious questions about humanity, courage, loyalty, love, and family in the context of a small remnant of humanity running from a hopeless battle with the evil Cylons. ER... maybe from that description it doesn't sound so great, but it has some wonderful storytelling. It even won a Peabody Award for writing this year. Plus the acting is just fabulous, Dr Baltar is completely nuts and Cylon Six model runs around in skimpy outfits!

Joy. Thanks for the suggesting some sci-fi shows for listening activities. Lots of dialogue is good, and the themes plus the quality of writing you describe bode well for these activities. I will check to see if any of these programs are available on the Fudan network. Ron
