Jennifer and Carol

Jennifer met Carol in Richmond in 1986 when both were college co-ops at Philip Morris. They became close friends and kept in touch through their college years, after-college jobs, marriages, and becoming mothers. Their meetings became less frequent after Carol moved to Australia.

When Jennifer told Carol that she was planning a trip to Shanghai to visit her father, Carol suggested that she schedule the trip at the time when she planned to be in Beijing visiting her brothers. This timing coincidence brought them together after a six-year hiatus.

Angelina's Response to Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men

Angelina

I was astonished to know the ending. For some time, I could not believe that it was George that shot Lennie dead. But after thinking for a while, I guess I know the answer. George had to shoot Lennie himself, not because he could live a peaceful life since then, but because he could not let Curley and other guys torture Lennie to death. George would probably feel guilty for all the rest of his life. I feel sorry for him.

I think maybe death is a relieve for Lennie. The most cruel thing for a person in the world is that he hardly knows anything. Lennie is in that case. He knew nothing but rabbits. At any time he might run into troubles. His behavior just did not make any sense. He had no thoughs, no insight for all his life. The outside world did not make any sense to him. Such a life is just a tragedy.

I also want to say something about Curley's wife. I feel sorry for that woman. I did not like her at first. I thought she was just a tart. But my opinion of her changed when I was reading chapter five. She consoled Lennie when he was sad. She talked to Lennie and considered him a good fellow. I assumed that she would not do that because she was too proud. In fact, what she really was was not the one she showed us. She had dreams. She wanted to be somebody. She left her aunt in order to go after her dreams, but she did not know that she just jumped out of a cage and into another, marrying to Curley. This marriage destroyed her life. I could imagine that Curley did not approve of her talking to others. He was jealous about that. She was just like a bird in a cage. She floated about the ranch not only because she was lonely, she needed a listener, but also because this was a way to express her anger. This poor woman suffered great horror when she died. She could not figure out why she died in this way. She had not achieved anything in her life. Life had fooled her! I think this is the power of fate. We all have our destiny. Our struggles are just too weak.

Angelina read 'Of Mice and Men' as an assignment in an English language class at Fudan University.
