Classrooms to Get New Podiums

Based on feedback from faculty, Dr. Joe Marolla, Vice Provost for Instruction, has tasked the Center for Teaching Excellence and Technology Services to develop a new standard podium design for centrally scheduled classrooms. This standard is to ensure that a PC, internet connection, and LCD projector be available for instructional use in a uniform design across all of these centrally scheduled classrooms. While the new design has been reviewed on a limited basis by faculty this new podium design will be available for all faculty to review on Monday, Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon and Thursday, January 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Cabell B36. Please feel free to drop by during these times to view the new design and provide feedback. The new podium will begin to appear in classrooms during spring 2007.

Microsoft Announces New MS Word Vulnerability

Microsoft reports that they are investigating a new zero-day attack using a vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Microsoft Word v. X for Mac, as well as Microsoft Works 2004, 2005, and 2006. In order for this attack to be carried out, a user must first open a malicious Word file attached to an e-mail or otherwise provided to them by an attacker.

As always, don't open a file, any file, unless you know where it came from. It is rumored that Microsoft's next monthly patch release in December may address this vulnerability but this has not been confirmed. If you feel you have been affected by this vulnerability you can contact Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY for assistance or contact the VCU Help Desk at 828-2227.
