Subject: Please note: Blackboard unavailable between 5pm and 5:30pm today (9/26/07)
Some of the Blackboard application servers will be stopped and started today (Wednesday, September 26, 2007) between 5pm and 5:30pm. You may be kicked off of the system during this time. We have put a change in place that requires a restart for the change to take effect. We hope this change will help with the problem of time-outs that some of you have been experiencing.

A Blackboard downtime will be observed from 4PM to Midnight, September 28, 2007.
Blackboard Maintenance is the second and fourth Friday of the month.
Beginning at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, there will be no wireless network connectivity in following areas: Brandt, Rhoads, Johnson Hall. This is to replace wireless network equipment that has been developing problems over the first few weeks of the semester. Please contact the Technology Services Help Desk at 828-2227 with any questions.
During October - November, faculty, staff, and affiliates will be required to have a strong eID password. If you have changed your password since April 6 2007, or if your password already meets the strong password requirements, you are not affected. Otherwise please visit the eID Manager site at http://eidmanager.vcu.edu/ to change your password and keep from being locked out. For assistance, contact the Help Desk, 828-2227.

Access to VCU Mail Anywhere via web browsers is now available.
E-Mail Services is currently working on access to VCU Mail Anywhere via http://webdirect.vcu.edu. and myVCU Portal. Users may connect to their mail at this time via the Lotus Notes client or via an IMAP connection. Please check this page for further updates.
Emergency 9-1-1 calls are experiencing routing problems at some locations on the MCV campus. VCU Telecommunications and Verizon staff is currently on site assessing the situation. Please call VCU Police at 828-1234 for any emergency calls.
On Sunday, 9/16/07, from 7:30 a.m. until approximately 8:00 a.m., the University Computer Center will be performing monthly maintenance which will affect ImageNow services.
During this time, the ImageNow server will be unavailable.
Scheduled maintenance will be performed on the E-mail system Saturday, September 15, between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. During this maintenance window, access to e-mail may be unavailable on your primary server. Access to your e-mail via your alternate server should be available automatically when accessing through VCU Mail Anywhere, or via your alternate server using an IMAP connection or the Notes client.
E-mail services will be performing a hardware and software upgrade on Domino server Beech Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, 2007, beginning at 8 a.m. The VCU Mail Anywhere website and Quickplaces will not be available during this time.
10:48 a.m. - A power outage in Brandt Hall has caused the building internet connection to not be available. Network Services is working to correct the problem. Please contact the Technology Services Help Desk should you need assistance at 828-2227.
On Saturday, 9/22/07, from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 9:30 a.m., the University Computer Center will be performing monthly maintenance which will affect ImageNow services.
During this time, the ImageNow server will be unavailable.
The issues that were experienced over the past week with wireless connections in some residence halls appears to have been stabilized at this time. Network Services will continue to closely monitor the wireless network over the weekend.
A change has been made to the system that handles authentication into various systems this afternoon so that access to Blackboard, myVCU portal, Clean Access, Mail Anywhere, and other VCU resources should be stabilized at this time. VCU Computer Center staff will continue to work on this system and monitor it over the weekend. Please feel free to contact the Help Desk at 828-2227 or ResNet Technical Support for assistance.
E-Mail servers Cedar, Hickory, Sycamore, and Mimosa will be unavailable from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, while a software update is applied. This interruption will affect outbound mail routing for IMAP users and access to group/generic e-mail accounts. IMAP users may sign into VCU Mail Anywhere to send mail during this time.
UPDATE2 (9/6/07 1:40 PM): The directory that supports the eID process was stabilized last night by 6 p.m. Another system used for authentication also experienced a problem with one of the authentication services which VCU Computer Center is working to resolve. There may be short, intermittent interruptions when logging onto some systems around campus and online. Again, these will be short interruptions so wait a few minutes and try to log in again. If a problem persists for you please contact the Technology Service Help Desk at 828-2227.
UPDATE (9/5/07 - 9:10 PM): The Help Desk has received many calls concerning network connectivity for wired and wireless connections to the VCU network tonight. It is believed that this problem is the known eID issue as posted earlier. VCU Computer Center staff are still working to find a solution. More information will follow when available.
ORIGINAL POST: The underlying system that supports VCU's eID is experiencing intermittent problems that affects a user's ability to log into any system that uses the eID for authentication into the system. The affected applications includes Blackboard, the myVCU portal, Mail Anywhere, and many other systems used by various departments around the University. VCU Computer Center staff is working with the vendor, Novell, to identify the problem and implement a solution. Until this time users may experience instances when they cannot log into applications that use the eID. These are short outages. If you experience a problem logging into a application wait a few minutes and try again. If you have any questions please contact the Technology Services Help Desk at 828-2227.
Access to instant messaging on Lotus Notes and VCU Mail Anywnere remains unavailable as maintenance is being completed.
