Various news services are reporting that a particularly nasty worm, Conficker, has already infected millions of personal computers. The best defense against the attack is to keep your computer up to date with the latest Microsoft Windows operating system patches. VCU's Sophos antivirus system can detect this attack and the VCU firewall has rules in place to block internet-based traffic in connection with this attack.
The chief attack vector for VCU seems to be machines already infected that are then attached to the VCU network. We encourage all users of mobile computing devices to keep their operating systems updated and to use an antivirus product such as the Sophos product provided by VCU for all faculty, staff, and students.
Please contact the VCU Help Desk (828-2227, help@vcu.edu) with any questions concerning this vulnerability or the Sophos antivirus software provided by VCU.
