SEEKING RESEARCH ASSISTANTS

FALL SEMESTER 2012

CLASS MEETINGS TUESDAYS 3:50-5:20 PM

In the fall of 2011 VCU launched Spit for Science: the VCU Student Survey (www.spit4science.vcu.edu). This project is following the 2011 VCU freshman class across its college years, and will also enroll new VCU freshman classes over the next few years.  The goal of the project is to understand how genetic and environmental factors come together to influence a variety of health-related outcomes in the VCU undergraduate population.

Research assistants will be involved in recruitment, marketing, data collection and analysis, and other research activities.  Students will work in teams to develop research questions and analyze Spit for Science data.  Weekly meetings will be held with different faculty involved in the project where students will review research papers and learn about topics related to the goals of the research.  Required class meetings will be held Tuesdays 3:50-5:20 PM in the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics conference room (located in Biotech 1, 800 E. Leigh Street on the MCV campus), which can be easily reached from the Monroe Park campus via the free Campus Connector.

In addition, members of the fall 2012 research team will be expected to assist with participant recruitment on-campus during Welcome Week (August 20-24, 2012). There are no prerequisites required to apply to be part of the team.  Students at all class levels are welcome to apply.  Enrollment will be for three credits (A-F) through either Psychology 494 or Honors 398.

To apply, please contact Dr. Jessica Salvatore at jesalvatore@vcu.edu
for an application.  Inquiries or questions can also be directed to Dr. Salvatore. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by noon on Monday, April 2, 2012. The final application deadline is Monday, April 9, 2012.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program will be hosting its next poster session:

Monday, April 2nd at 10am in room 441 of Hibbs Hall

The workshop will focus on the significance of a poster as a vehicle for research presentation while covering some of the technical aspects of poster creation from design to printing.

Completion of the workshop will assist in preparing undergrads to present their work, whether for the Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity taking place on campus April 25, 2012, or for any other national conferences related to undergraduate research.

In order to participate in the workshop, students must first register with Herb Hill at hhill@vcu.edu to ensure sufficient space.  If you would like to workshop your poster, but are unable to attend any of the announced sessions, please contact Herb Hill to schedule an alternate meeting time.

The VA Engage Journal promotes engaged scholarship by providing undergraduate students with a forum to publish community based research, case studies, reflection essays, and book reviews. The VA Engage Journal encourages faculty mentorship of undergraduate learning and scholarship in community engagement. Any undergraduate enrolled full or part-time at a two or four year college or university in Virginia is eligible to submit an article. All submissions will be reviewed by an editorial committee comprised of faculty, students, and community members.

VA Engage Journal solicits articles and reviewers in the spring and is published annually online in the fall.

Submission instructions are here: http://www.vaengagejournal.org/submit

The Spring Survey is Coming!

All freshmen 18 years and older will receive emails with a survey link starting March 9, 2012. Earn another $10 by completing a shorter, follow-up survey. If you didn't participate in the Fall you can still take part! Complete the shorter survey for $10 with the option to also participate in the DNA component for another $10!

Spit for Science: The VCU Student Survey is an effort being led by researchers at VCU to create a unique university-wide research opportunity for VCU students. All incoming freshmen who are 18 years of age or older for fall 2011 are invited to be participants.

The scientific focus of the project is to understand why some people are more likely than others to develop problems associated with the use of alcohol and other substances, and difficulties with emotional health. The project aims to understand how individual genetic predispositions come together with environmental factors to contribute to these outcomes. We know that 1 in 4 people over the age of 18 are affected by substance use or mental health problems. This project is an opportunity for students at VCU to work together with some of the leading researchers in the world in this area to try to understand and prevent these important and widespread problems.

We hope to use the findings from the project to feed back into programming at VCU to benefit our VCU students and community. In addition, there are a number of exciting educational opportunities that stem from having a project like this at VCU.

VCU Student Research Organization Meeting

Where: VCU Student Commons, Virginia Room A

When: Monday February 27, 2012, 3pm

The Student Research Organization's next General Body meeting will be
held Monday February 27, at 3pm in Virginia Room A of the VCU Student
Commons.

The Student Research Organization (SRO) was built and founded to promote
undergraduate research at Virginia Commonwealth University. As VCU
makes the shift to become more research oriented, this will be the
student-built group that will make a big difference in the change.

At this meeting, we will discuss our overall purpose and ideas for
future events, as well as present our upcoming events that we have
planned for the semester.

Help the VCU SRO raise money for Relay for Life!

Relay for Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the
globe celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved
ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

Donate or join the SRO Relay team on their Relay website.

You can also help the SRO raise money by purchasing cupcakes and "feet"
from student researchers at the VCU Commons Concession Stand on
Tuesday, February 28 between 12:30 and 1:30pm!!
