SEEKING RESEARCH ASSISTANTS
FALL SEMESTER 2012
CLASS MEETINGS TUESDAYS 3:50-5:20 PM
In the fall of 2011 VCU launched Spit for Science: the VCU Student Survey (www.spit4science.vcu.edu). This project is following the 2011 VCU freshman class across its college years, and will also enroll new VCU freshman classes over the next few years. The goal of the project is to understand how genetic and environmental factors come together to influence a variety of health-related outcomes in the VCU undergraduate population.
Monday, April 2nd at 10am in room 441 of Hibbs Hall
The workshop will focus on the significance of a poster as a vehicle for research presentation while covering some of the technical aspects of poster creation from design to printing.
Completion of the workshop will assist in preparing undergrads to present their work, whether for the Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity taking place on campus April 25, 2012, or for any other national conferences related to undergraduate research.
In order to participate in the workshop, students must first register with Herb Hill at hhill@vcu.edu to ensure sufficient space. If you would like to workshop your poster, but are unable to attend any of the announced sessions, please contact Herb Hill to schedule an alternate meeting time.
The VA Engage Journal promotes engaged scholarship by providing undergraduate students with a forum to publish community based research, case studies, reflection essays, and book reviews. The VA Engage Journal encourages faculty mentorship of undergraduate learning and scholarship in community engagement. Any undergraduate enrolled full or part-time at a two or four year college or university in Virginia is eligible to submit an article. All submissions will be reviewed by an editorial committee comprised of faculty, students, and community members.
VA Engage Journal solicits articles and reviewers in the spring and is published annually online in the fall.

The scientific focus of the project is to understand why some people are more likely than others to develop problems associated with the use of alcohol and other substances, and difficulties with emotional health. The project aims to understand how individual genetic predispositions come together with environmental factors to contribute to these outcomes. We know that 1 in 4 people over the age of 18 are affected by substance use or mental health problems. This project is an opportunity for students at VCU to work together with some of the leading researchers in the world in this area to try to understand and prevent these important and widespread problems.
We hope to use the findings from the project to feed back into
programming at VCU to benefit our VCU students and community. In
addition, there are a number of exciting educational opportunities that
stem from having a project like this at VCU.
